Trailblazer Group Volunteer

Could you help us make nature accessible for everyone?
8 hrs / week From Tue 3rd Jan 2023

Join us at Open Country (Charity No. 1107331) the award-winning charity and help disabled people to access the countryside. We are running a wide variety of activities in Wakefield, including hiking, wheelchair walks, nature work parties and tandem cycling. If you have a love of the outdoors and an empathy for people with disabilities, we’d love to hear from you!

Open Country's new Trailblazer group is helping to make nature accessible to everyone. We go out in our minibus every Tuesday from 10am - 4pm with a group of adults with learning disabilities and volunteer supporters.

Tasks vary from week-to-week but include path laying (on public footpaths in green spaces), vegetation cut back work, bench building, barrier removal (replacing stiles with gates) and some conservation project work too. Our aim is that everyone can use the paths we work on, including wheelchair users. Flattening and widening the path makes a huge difference, as well as replacing steps with ramps.

This role would suit somebody who is physically active and wants to enjoy fun, satisfying jobs that want to support adults with learning disabilities in the countryside. No experience is necessary!
